Creatinine and Tests
Creatine is generated inside the body and is stored in the skeletal muscles in the phosphorylated form. When the muscle contraction takes place then the creatine and the creatine phosphate are continuously converted into creatinine. Creatinine is an unnecessary substance for the body and is thrown outside from the body by the kidneys. The tests which are used to measure the levels of creatine and creatinine in the body are referred as Creatinine clearance tests. Creatine is continuously generated at a constant rate by the body and there is no effect of any physical activity and food intake on creatinine levels. If your kidneys sops functioning then creatinine level in the urine starts decreasing while the level starts to increase inside the blood stream.
Creatinine Level Tests
There are generally three types of creatinine tests
Blood creatine Level: This type of creatine level test is done to check the functionality of the kidneys. If the level of creatinine in the blood is high then it is an indication of abnormality in the functioning of the kidneys. The level of creatinine in the kidneys depends upon the muscle tissues. Normally a man have higher creatinine level in the blood than woman.
Creatinine clearance Tests: This test is done to examine how well your kidneys are removing the creatinine from your blood stream. The test can be done with the help of both blood and urine samples. The information retrieved from this test gives a better idea of the kidney function than Creatinine Blood Test. The sample of urine is taken after a gap of 24 hours from the blood sample.
Blood urea nitrogen-to-creatinine ratio This test helps your physician to look for the problems such as dehydration which can lead to abnormal creatinine levels. It is also used to measure the urea level inside the body. Urea is a harmful product which is generated when a protein molecule breaks. This test is also used to predict the kidney's functionality.
Things to remember
Avoid exercises e days before a creatine test.
Do not eat meat in a large quantity 24 hours before the creatinine test.
Do not drink fluids such as tea and coffee because these acts as diuretics and therefore results in more urination.
